Now that the holiday hustle and bustle has died down, we officially turn our eyes to the next big day on our calendars: Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is celebrated on February 14 almost all over the world. On this day, we would like to confess and thank our loved ones for their presence, all in the name of Saint. Valentine! Who is this mysterious saint? Or maybe you are looking for inspiration for this year's Valentine's Day gift? You've come to the right place!

The history of Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day 2023 Where did Valentine's Day come from? The history of this holiday - and the history of its patron - is shrouded in mystery. We know that February has long been celebrated as the month of romance, and Valentine's Day as we know it today contains traces of both Christian and ancient Roman traditions, but who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

To learn about the origins of this holiday, we should familiarize ourselves with the figure of Saint Valentine. Legend has it that he lived as a priest in Rome in the 3rd century. When Claudius II came to the conclusion that single men made better soldiers than those married with families, he forbade marriage. Saint Valentine, realizing the injustice of this decree, granted them secretly, for which he was later executed.

We can also look for the origin of Valentine's Day in the Roman pagan holiday. After a series of rituals, all the maidens and bachelors met in the courtyard near a large urn in which the women placed their names. Then the men drew a name and paired up with their "drawn" beloved for a year.

In medieval France and England, it was widely believed that February 14 was the beginning of the bird mating season, which further strengthened the idea.
