The bean bag and its turbulent history.
The bean bag is a piece of furniture with an exceptionally interesting history. According to historians, the first pouffes were invented by the ancient Egyptians in around 2000 BC! They used small bags filled with beans for recreational games or juggling, which gave rise to the idea for this unusual element of decor.
Interestingly, they were also used in China to help teach tai chi, a traditional Chinese martial art. At some point, tai-chi masters began to use small bags filled with sand, pebbles or dry beans. They kept these bags in the air by hitting them with different parts of their bodies, making slow, graceful movements that helped them focus on their inner power.
The first bean bags as furniture were created in the 1960s. Roger Dean, who worked for the Royal College of Art, is an English artist, designer and publisher. He created an armchair that is considered the predecessor of the bag pouffe . Shortly thereafter, during the Italian Modernist movement, three Italian architects created a comfortable shapeless armchair called the "Sacco". Pouffe bags allow the body to adapt, leaving an "imprint" like in fresh snow.
The target market for pouffe bags were hippies and non-conformist households, they were intended to become a radical element of "anti-design" to criticize all conservative tastes, but they gained in popularity and to this day we can still see them in homes, schools, offices and even swimming pools!
